Fender Duo-Sonic Solid Body Electric Guitar (1960)
Fender Duo-Sonic Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1960), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 54947, desert sand finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown hard shell case.
This is a lovely clean and all original example of a late 1960 Fender Duo-Sonic, the company's original two-pickup student guitar. By the middle of 1964 this 3/4 sized model would be re-styled to match the new Mustang, with a slightly different body and altered switching and cosmetics. This more solidly "Pre-CBS" guitar is a transitional version lacking the anodized pickguard of the late 1950's and with the new-in-1959 "slab" rosewood fingerboard on the maple neck. Other distinctive appointments include the old-style "desert sand" body finish and two brown-covered single-coil pickups mounted in the off-white single-layer plastic pickguard selected by a 3-way toggle, with volume and tone controls.
The heel of the short 22 1/2" scale clay dot rosewood fingerboard neck is pencil dated 10-60, while the original pots are coded to the 47th week of that year, The headstock carries plastic-button Kluson Deluxe tuners and a "Spaghetti" style Fender logo decal. This wonderfully kept gem from when Fender entered the 1960's is less commonly found than both the earlier 1950s maple-fingerboard style and the later Mustang-styled versions. It is as always a super handy and fine sounding little guitar, much more versatile than its single-pickup sibling the Musicmaster and a lot of fun to play.
Overall length is 37 3/4 in. (95.9 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 1/2 in. (572 mm.). Width of nut is 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.).
This guitar is in very clean and nearly all original shape, looking pretty much like it came off the pawn shop wall in, say, 1962. There are some faint dings and scuffs in the body lacquer, but minor enough so as to nearly camouflage into the original Desert Sand finish. The back of the neck has a few small feelable dinks and very light rub wear on the edges. The electronics are all original and pristinely kept, the hardware is original and clean with the exception of the 3-way switch and steel bridge saddles being slightly corroded; the biggest signs of wear anywhere on the instrument. The original (and often lost) press-on chrome bridge cover is still intact.
The fingerboard has some shallow finger divots in the rosewood slab fingerboard only in the first couple fret zone on the treble side; the guitar was refretted some time ago with wire slightly taller than the original. It's almost difficult to believe that this guitar was played enough to have required a refret but that little finger wear let us know that this guitar was genuinely played and loved; obviously loved a lot for how carefully it was handled! It resides in the original brown HSC, solid with some general wear. Excellent Condition.
