Rickenbacker 360-12V64 12 String Electric Guitar (1987)
Rickenbacker 360-12V64 Model 12 String Electric Guitar (1987), made in Santa Ana, CA, serial # I0-8041, Fireglo red sunburst finish, maple body, laminated maple neck with padouk fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This 360/12V64 is a lovely example of the Rickenbacker's faithful 1980s reissue of the original first-generation Model 360-12, one of their most sought after classic 1960s guitars. It is styled after the earliest 1964 Rickenbacker 12 strings with a flat topped, bound body as provided to George Harrison in February '64 and prominently used by him soon after. In the meantime Rickenbacker re-designed the guitar with the rounded top body design introduced in spring '64, making this original "old style" version an instant collectible and perennially very sought after guitar.
In the 1980s Rickenbacker acknowledged the status of this model by making it the subject of one of their earliest and most faithfully accurate reissues. The body and neck carry a very deep iteration of the classic red sunburst "Fireglo" finish, almost shading into the darker 'burst the company calls "Autumnglo". The Model 360-12 carries Deluxe features with triangle inlay on the bound fingerboard, a single bound body and unbound sound hole. The pickups are faithful recreations of the 1960s "toaster top" single coils wired in the classic 5-knob, one switch circuit with a choice of mono or "Rick-O-Sound" stereo output. The 1963-4 squared neck heel, flat plate tailpiece and 6-saddle bridge are authentically reproduced, the only notable variation being Schaller-made reproductions of the 1960s Kluson deluxe tuners, which were not available in 1987.
The Rickenbacker 360 kicked off a wave of popularity for the electric 12-string in 1964-6 that had every other maker trying to catch up. In the middle of that decade the unique sound of an entire style of music centered around it. A mainstay of the California company's line from 1964 right up through to the present, the 360/12 is the instrument that really put Rickenbacker on the map as a modern guitar maker. This 360/12V64 recreates that icon of the '60s, synonymous to many with the sounds of the folk-rock era as well as more recent "jangle" styles; in this case specifically recalling George Harrison's trademark 1965-65 look and sound.
Overall length is 40 1/4 in. (102.2 cm.), 15 in. (38.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This now almost 40(!) year old guitar remains very clean, showing a few light signs of use with some minor scuffing to the finish and hardware. A slimmer bridge baseplate from Winfield has been substituted for the heavier original, which is in the case. All else on the guitar is original and intact; the pots date to 1986. This is a very nice player and a fine example of a classic 1960s American guitar, still one of the best vintage re-issues ever. It resides in the original black Tolex HSC. Overall Excellent Condition.
