Gibson A-4 Model Carved Top Mandolin, c. 1934, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, red sunburst top, dark stained back and sides finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This is an interesting and rare Gibson mandolin...a very late Style A-4 from the model's last year of production. This A-4 has a raised fingerboard unlike earlier examples, and while somewhat less fancy than its 1910's or '20's ancestors is a very fine sounding instrument.
Overall length is 26 in. (66 cm.), 10 1/4 in. (26 cm.) width, and 1 7/8 in. (4.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/16 in. (30 mm.).
Very clean overall; small repaired grain crack on the back of the headstock and original pickguard included fairly well into celluloid decomposition but not mounted on the instrument.
All parts original. Some scrapes to the top, but overall the finish is quite well-preserved. A very fine player with a recent partial refret and setup. A wonderful and unusual Gibson mandolin. Generally Excellent Condition.
