Hermann Hauser Viennese Model Classical Guitar (1925), made in Munich, natural varnish finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; maple neck with ebony fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
A lovely example of an early Hermann Hauser guitar, built in the traditional style of Viennese and German 19th century instruments. Before the already experienced Hauser met Andres Segovia, this was the type of guitar he, like all German luthiers, was accustomed to creating. After exposure to Segovia's Ramirez, Hauser soon changed direction and began building Spanish-style concert guitars which are still acclaimed as some of the very finest ever made. Hauser's earlier Germanic instruments are less known, but they are also among the finest of their type and show the impeccable craftsmanship for which Hauser and his descendants are still venerated.
This guitar was completed in 1925, and is signed and dated by the maker on a beautifully preserved label. The guitar was built shortly before Hauser changed the direction of his career, and represents his highly evolved Germanic instrument before he incorporated the iconic Torres and Ramirez design elements. A wonderful playing guitar which is also of considerable historic interest.
Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 in. (7.6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 15/16 in. (49 mm.). Overall a very original guitar; there are 5 long top cracks (all solidly closed but visible) with some attendant buffing and French polish. There is some moderately heavy play wear to the black neck finish. There is an area of dings and wear into the finish on the upper bout side, and finish wear to the edges on the back and sides. Bridge and tuners are original; one of the bridge end ornaments has been neatly replaced, as has one bridge pin (the rest appear original to the guitar). Overall this is very well preserved for an instrument of this type and age, and has an extremely lush and beautiful sound for a German maple-body instrument. Excellent Condition.
