Vega Tubaphone #3 Model 5 String Resonator Banjo (1928), made in Boston, Mass., natural mahogany finish, maple rim; laminated mahogany neck with, original black hard shell case.
A very cool original (non-conversion) Tubaphone #3 5-string from the late 1920's. Original geared tuners, close fitting (non-flanged) resonator that is easily removable for openback play. A true 5-stringer like this is a fairly rare coming from what was primarily a 4-string banjo era, this Tubaphone is a nice find in an authentic vintage 5-string.
Overall length is 37 1/4 in. (94.6 cm.), 11 in. (27.9 cm.) diameter head, and 2 3/4 in. (7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 27 in. (686 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.). A very nice example overall-hardware appears original except the tailpiece is an original Vega Professional with a clean added 5th string drill hole. Tuners are 2-tab Grovers and appear original; head is a fiberskyn style perfect for a combination vintage skin-like tone and modern convenience. Typically powerful Tubaphone sound; a good player and a really excellent old-time or string band banjo. Includes an excellent original HSC. Generally Excellent Condition.
