C. F. Martin Style 1 Model Soprano Ukulele (1962), made in Nazareth, PA, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosweood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.

This is a beautiful example of an early 1960s Martin Style 0 ukulele, the company's standard model for decades. The Style 1 is just a bit fancier than the Style 0, with 3-ply binding on the top and single binding on the back. The finish is a dark mahogany overall with the gold Martin decal on the headstock. Distinguishing features of this late '50's/early '60's period are the longer headstock with a small Martin decal and tuners with rounded plastic buttons on a short shaft.

This uke is still in the original grey chipboard case, which has a Coast Wholesale sticker under the lid. It also still has the original Martin hang tag, hand filled in with a price of $45 which allows it to be dated exactly to 1962-3, the only years that was the retail price. Although these little ukes were among Martin's least expensive instrument, they are always built to the company's usual standard and are still considered among the best-sounding ukuleles ever manufactured. This one is an excellent player with a nicely rounded tone, and a great original package.

Overall length is 21 in. (53.3 cm.), 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. (349 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).

This uke is very clean overall, one of the nicest Martins we have seen in a while. The finish has some light checking and handling marks but the instrument shows hardly any play wear. There are also no cracks or repairs anywhere. This is a lovely example of Martin craftsmanship and a great-playing and sounding uke. The original case is still quite functional, in excellent condition for being nearly 60-year-old cardboard! Excellent + Condition.
