C. F. Martin D-41 Special Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2006), made in Nazareth, PA, natural lacquer finish, Indian rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is a great sounding modern (for us) Martin Dreadnought, a 2006 D-41 Special that neatly combines the features of the stock D-41 model with some more old-style specs from the Vintage Series instruments. The most important of these is a forward shifted 5/16" scalloped-brace layout for the Sitka spruce top, which helps create a noticeably more open tone than many 21st century rosewood Dreadnoughts. The Sitka spruce and "master grade" Indian rosewood chosen for this instrument are very tightly and evenly grained, finished with a thin gloss nitrocellulose lacquer. The top features a tastefully applied aging toner, which gives it a more natural "vintage" look.

The D-41 model is distinguished by abalone around the top edge and soundhole rosette, with multiple layer grained Ivoroid bindings around body and neck. The Special additionally features lovely cut pearl snowflake fingerboard inlay and a long through vintage style saddle. The neck profile is Martin's "modified V" shape and is very comfortable. The headstock is faced with the vertical "CF MARTIN" abalone inlay and fitted with gold plated Martin branded openback G-98 style tuners with "butterbean" buttons. There is a 3-point K&K pickup installed under the bridgeplate wired to an endpin jack, but no internal preamp or controls.

Overall length is 40 3/4 in. (103.5 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 13/16 in. (12.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/4 in. (641 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This D-41 Special shows signs of use over the past 15 years but has not been heavily played. The most notable wear is to the headstock face, where someone was not too careful with their string ends leaving a decent number of shallow scratches in the lacquer. That is the only really notable wear to the guitar; the rest of the finish shows just some minor scuffing (a spot in the middle of the back) and typical handling marks.

The frets have some minor wear in the lower positions but still play well. The tone of this D-41 Special is deep and rich but still well defined with a better balance and punch to the high range than many Dreadnoughts. With 15 years of aging already this is one of the most impressive "newer" Martin guitar we have had recently, a visual showpiece but also a very fine sounding guitar. Excellent + Condition.
