Gretsch Electromatic Model 6155 Model Tube Amplifier (1959), made in Chicago, serial # T6620, blue textured Tolex finish.

Height is 15 in. (38.1 cm.), 18 in. (45.7 cm.) width, and 8 1/2 in. (21.6 cm.) deep.

Here we have a very nice example of the Gretsch Electromatic Model 6155, which would later be known as the "Newport". This was the second-youngest amp in the catalog at the time sited just beneath the tremolo-equipped 6156 (later named "Playboy"). This '58-59 version of the model features the earlier non-slanted front cabinet, housing a 10" speaker. It features three instrument inputs and a single volume and tone control. Running two 6973 power tubes (somewhat related to EL84s), it puts out around 15 watts and could be loosely compared to a Fender Tweed Harvard in its line-up placement with its 10" speaker and similar control layout, and is comparatively just as articulate with great high-end detail and a truly wonderful breakup when pushed.

Cosmetically, this little amp is in great shape. The textured Tolex covering, the same as found on Gretsch's period guitar cases, has minimal wear except for a few small scuffs and a small tear on the front right lower corner. The grille covering has lost some of its fabric weave, exposing the metal mesh just around the area in front of the speaker cone. The faceplate is nicely clean with minimal scratches and hardly any sign of corrosion and both the handle and coveted Gretsch metal knobs are in great shape too.

Electrically, the amp is nicely original. The speaker is the original Rola, marked 285-832, dating it to the 32nd week of 1958. It has been professionally reconed and sounds great. Both transformers are original to the amp and like all our amps, all the electrolytic caps have been replaced for reliable use, a 3-prong power cord has been installed and all the jacks, pots and sockets have been cleaned.

Gretsch amps of this period were built by Valco in Chicago and have the same pedigree as their own great sounding National and Supro offerings. This is a fabulous sounding small amp, very solidly made and packing a lot of power for its size! Excellent Condition.
