Fender Precision Bass Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1960), made in Fullerton, California, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown tolex hard shell case.
This fabulous bass is a played-in but entirely original example of a very early slab-fingerboard Fender Precision from 1960, made less than a year after the model took this now-classic final form. The earlier 1950s maple neck and gold anodized metal pickguard had been supplanted by the features seen here by the summer of 1959, and for many years after this was the pattern for the Precision, then as now the world's standard electric bass. The pots on this one are dated 60-19 (19th week of that year) and like all Fender necks from this period, the heel shows no date stamp.
The bass carries the classic pre-CBS features including the clay dot, slab rosewood fingerboard neck, thick tortoise celluloid pickguard, and thin sunburst lacquer finish. The headstock is adorned with the old "Spaghetti" Fender logo decal. This bass is an absolute classic, as played by the great majority of the then-new electric bassists of the 1960s and heard on literally thousands of recordings. It remains a wonderful instrument for any style of music, an absolute joy to play, and a prime example of the glory days of Fender.
Overall length is 45 3/4 in. (116.2 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).
This bass has seen some serious play over the years but remains in gloriously original condition, unaltered and complete except for the tailpiece cover. The finish shows fade to the face, giving the bass an older two-tone sunburst look, and there is armwear down to the wood on the top edge of the body and some fairly substantial belt buckle wear to the back. There is some wear down to the wood on the back of the neck, giving it that glorious played-in old Fender feel, but despite this the original small frets show only minimal wear as the bass appears to have been strung with flatwound strings since new.
The original owner had his name in applique letters along the upper horn. They are long gone, but the clear residual outline is visible on the body, if only on close inspection. Nothing else has ever been repaired or altered; this bass has just been played for almost 60 years and it's easy to see why. It it simply one of the best handling Precisions we have seen in 40+ years: medium light, resonant, and perfectly balanced -- exactly the kind of bass you want if you only have one! Perfect for anything from jazz to Motown/Stax sounds to more modern styles, complete and ready to go in its original first-year brown Tolex case. Very Good + Condition.
